Origins of the Life Changing Magic of Self-Coaching
The process I teach in this programme is one I developed while tackling a project that felt monumental: painting my house. While I had experience painting interior walls, this was an entirely different challenge. Every weekend, I battled with my own thoughts—telling myself how hard it was, how I’d never finish, and that my handiwork wasn’t good enough. Stripping away layers of old paint – and even vines that had been painted over, repairing rotten weatherboards and awnings, working around unpredictable weather, navigating scaffolding to work at heights, and the awkward positions I had to contort myself into just to reach certain spots was tricky and uncomfortable, not to mention the size of my 1924 bungalow. It was a big job, hard work, and sometimes just plain boring. To get the house painted required sacrifices, like saying no to invitations for fun things on the weekends. Coaching myself through the self-doubt, tedium, and endless challenges helped me push forward, be consistent, and finally get the job done. Now I no longer carry the weight of shame from living in a tired, peeling, weather-worn house. Now, she stands proudly, transformed with a fresh coat of paint and a beautiful new colour scheme. What was once a constant reminder of unfinished work is now a home that feels loved and cared for, and I’m so pleased that I did it!
