Do you ever feel like your mind is juggling a dozen open tabs — unfinished tasks, half-formed ideas, or things you meant to do but didn’t? Maybe you’re multitasking, trying to do several things at once, but not completing anything that feels satisfying. This is the effect of open loops — the unresolved, uncompleted, or undecided things in your life. It’s like your mind is spinning its wheels.
Every time you think, “I need to…” or “I should really…” without taking action or making a decision, your brain keeps that loop open, quietly using up mental energy. This background noise can build into anxiety, overwhelm, or mental fatigue — even when the tasks themselves are small.
Closed loops, on the other hand, offer the satisfying click of completion. Washing the dishes, replying to a message, finishing a project — these are the moments that bring a sense of relief and mental ease. Every closed loop creates a little more space in your mind.
Some open loops — especially daily tasks like checking emails or tidying — need regular attention. If left too long, they pile up and become sources of stress. But not all open loops are bad. Some are creative. They hold potential, inspiration, and possibility — like an unfinished piece of art, a brainstormed idea, or a half-written poem. These loops are meant to stay open for a while. They invite us to return and explore.

Living a meaningful life isn’t about closing every loop. It’s about knowing which ones to close to create calm and clarity, and which to keep open to allow for growth, creativity, or curiosity.

I like to categorise them into the following three categories:
- Inchies: Small, everyday tasks that are quickly completed and create breathing room. These include good habits that keep your life running smoothly.
- Creative loops: Intentional openings like art, writing, or dreaming that spark energy and inspiration. These include short to medium term projects or creations.
- Big picture loops: Long-term goals that require slow, steady progress — like building a healthy lifestyle, creating a calm and beautiful home, or growing a business.
When you consciously balance these — closing what needs closure, opening what brings joy, and tending to the tasks that help you move the needle forwards — you reduce overwhelm, reclaim your energy, and create a life that feels purposeful, creative, and fulfilling.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by too many open loops in your life, or bored and uninspired because nothing feels creatively alive — it might be time to look at how you’re using your time and energy.
Together we can map your current loops, uncover where you’re wasting time or losing motivation, and create a rhythm that supports both order and inspiration.
